Welcome to a group of women who's goal is to encourage each other to put down some serious roots in the Word of God. This blog is dedicated to reading through the Bible in a year. Hopefully you will find the encouragement and accountability here that you need to push through the tough parts- or when life just gets in the way. The reading plan is located at the bottom of the blog. It contains links to the passages we are reading through biblegateway.com. You can use those links or read your own Bible, whichever you prefer.
We are all members of Oak Hill Baptist Church in Griffin, Georgia and felt the need in our own life for a little bit of the Lord's splendor. Please join us!!

Should I put it back?

"Hey Mom, what's this?" Many mothers cringe when those words come from a five yr old boy! "I don't know, son, where'd you get it?" I replied. "From my ear." Driving a big suburban down the road at the time, I could barely make out an orange-colored substance on my son's finger. I informed him that it was earwax. "Oh," he says, "what's it for?" I explained in my best homeschooling voice about the necessity of earwax and it's importance in God's plan for protecting our ears, and it must have made an impression because the next words I heard were, "Should I put it back??!?!"

Has your son or daughter ever explained life in such a way that your couldn't help but laugh? You know, sometimes a child has more understanding than we adults do. Sometimes their advice just makes sense! A friend recently sent a video clip of a 9yr old boy explaining why we should read through the whole Bible....that the Bible was "kinda like scene selection of a DVD movie....if you just go in and watch certain scenes you won't get a full understanding of what God is saying or doing, so we should watch the whole movie." Some parts you may just want to take out all together! Today's reading passage has several of those scenes, in my opinion.

We find Lot, alone at the gate of a very wicked city. The angels who have been sent to rescue Lot and his family, find themselves face-to-face with the evil in the land. That's scary. (Lot doesn't earn any parenting stars in this scene, either.) Upon fleeing Sodom, Lot's wife disobeyed the Lord's command not to look back and is immediately turned to a statue of salt. That's strange. Lot and two of his daughters find themselves in a cave, and whether or not the daughters' motives were honorable in carrying on the family name, their tactics certainly were not. That's bad.

We then flash over to Abraham and Sarah, where he tries the whole "Just tell them you're my sister" line again. That's inaccurate. We find God faithful to His promise to Abraham, rescuing him yet again. When the family was celebrating a special day in the life of Isaac, his mother caught his half-brother teasing him and declared, "Hagar's got to go!" So Abraham sent his son, Ishmael, and the mother, Hagar, on their way with nothing more than bread and water. That's harsh.

Sometimes we are tempted to take out parts of God's word because it's not politically correct, or it's uncomfortable to think about, or it doesn't fit picture of God we've created in our own minds. Think about this.....are there some parts of your own life that you'd like to take out? Maybe some embarrassing moments or horrible mistakes that caused terrible consequences? I'd like to challenge you to consider this thought... maybe God reveals Himself during those times, in ways that He wouldn't ordinarily. He is His strongest when we are weakest. His grace and mercy exceed our greatest imaginations! Remember our girl, Ruth? She was a Moabite woman included in lineage of David.....descended from one of Lot's daughters. Remember Rehoboam? He was King Solomon's son.....descended from the other of Lot's daughters, an Ammonite. Both of these peoples were enemies of the Hebrews, but God's grace has no limit! He proves His grace in stories like these!

I'm asking you to reconsider "deleting" parts of God's story. Everything in His word is important to us knowing Him more fully! Timothy says "All scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness." Don't skip parts of His word, but instead ask yourself, "Should I put it back?"

  1. Love it. It has been my pleasure to discover that those parts that often seem the hardest to process yield the most beautiful truths sometimes. The story of Lot is certainly cautionary. In contrast to Abraham, we see what becomes of a life that holds on to the things of this world with all we've got. It affects you AND your family. It reminds me not only to put some things back but to open my hand for the Lord to take it if He wants it on others.

  2. Good insight ladies. There is certainly an advantage to studying God's word in community.

Have any of you been reading out of a version of the Bible that you don't usually read from? I have been reading from the Message Bible.

    http://www.biblegateway.com/versions/Message-MSG-Bible/

I find that reading familiar scripture from an unfamiliar version causes me to really read it and not just skim over it. This version is also in modern English, so it reads like something written recently. This is not my "study Bible" version, but I like it because it helps me hear with fresh ears an old familiar story.

I also love being able do the daily reading online, because I can quickly switch to another version to better understand what I am reading.

  3. I have found as well that sometimes the parts that we want to "put back" are the parts that bless our lives in the future. We can't see the whole picture, but thankfully God can and does. Like the tapestry we hear about - while we are looking at all the strings and things - God is weaving a beautiful picture.

  4. Admittedly, it's been a long time since I've read through the book of Genesis. I have thoroughly enjoyed these first few days together. With a "fresh" set of eyes on these stories, I'm AMAZED at the ideas and thoughts of these famous people of the Bible.

Lot offered his virgin daughters to the men of Sodom. Whoa!! A few sentences later, we learn that they are both engaged to be married. I wonder if they knew Lot had offered their future wives to other men.

Also, I find it interesting that only three people survived the destruction of Sodom. Remember Abraham's negotation with God. The last thing God told Abraham was “For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.” God kept His word.

These chapters are not only very interesting to me from a historical perspective, but are very encouraging to me. I'm also amazed at God's continued grace, protection, and provisions for his children.

Lord, help me to do what is right and honorable in Your eyes!

  5. DOES IT NOT AMAZE YOU HOW GOD SENDS ANGELS TO TALK TO SOMEONE TO ASK GOD TO SAVE US AND THEY ARE THERE TO PULL US BACK IN A DOOR, LOCK IT AND CAUSE THOSE WHO ARE AGAINST US TO GO BLIND. I AM SO AMAZED AT HOW LOT STILL NOT WANT TO GO AFTER HE SAW ALL OF THIS RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM.
WE NEED TO WATCH FOR THOSE ANGELS AND LISTEN TO THEM. I REALLY AM ENJOYING THIS. I AM SO PROUD OF ALL OF YOU.

  6. Harriet, I've been reading NIV and my old faithful NKJV :) For this post, I pulled out the Message and Matthew Henry, LOL! I never knew how much encouraging each other through the Word would help!!! I love seeing things from other's points of view. Press on, ladies!

  7. Okay...that video Jaybrena made a link to in her post is UNBELIEVEABLE!!!! What a FANTASTIC summary of the Bible by a NINE YEAR OLD! If you did not watch it yet, PLEASE do so! It is absolutely amazing that a child so young could have such a complete understanding of the ENTIRE Word of God! Jesus REALLY knew what He was talking about when He said that if we wanted to inherit the Kingdom of God we had to have a child-like faith. Maybe THAT is why I am so drawn to young children??? (BIG smile!)

  9. Young children have a way with words and an understanding that truly is beyond their years. If we as adults would just sit back sometimes and see life through the eyes of a child. Truly AMAZING!!!!
