Welcome to a group of women who's goal is to encourage each other to put down some serious roots in the Word of God. This blog is dedicated to reading through the Bible in a year. Hopefully you will find the encouragement and accountability here that you need to push through the tough parts- or when life just gets in the way. The reading plan is located at the bottom of the blog. It contains links to the passages we are reading through biblegateway.com. You can use those links or read your own Bible, whichever you prefer.
We are all members of Oak Hill Baptist Church in Griffin, Georgia and felt the need in our own life for a little bit of the Lord's splendor. Please join us!!

Family of God

Chronicles is a book on geneology; My head starts to spin when I try to read all these names so I am not going to bore you with who belongs to who. As you read this book, do you stop and think, "why is this important?"

We all need a sense of belonging and knowing where we came from. Geneology is very big in the US. People wanting to know a little about their ancestory and where they originally came from. In my family, we have a sense of pride that my 3rd great grandfather was Benjamin Rush. He was a doctor, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and a devout Christian. Kids that are adopted want to know where they came from even when they have been adopted into a good family.

In studying geneology in the Bible, we can understand where they came from and why they are the way they are. Even Jesus' lineage was traced showing that He came from the blood line that God said that he would. Proving once again that God's word is true.

One thing we as believers have in common; we have been adopted into the Family of God.

I'm so glad I'm a part of the Family of God,
I've been washed in the fountain, cleansed by his blood,
Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod,
For I'm a part of the family the Family of God.

You will notice we say "brother and sister" 'round here.
It's because we're a family and these are so near,
When one has a heartache, we all share the tears,
and rejoice in each victory in this family so dear.

From the door of an orphanage to the house of the king.
No longer an outcast, a new song I sing,
From rags unto riches, from the weak to the strong,
I'm not worthy to be here, but praise God I belong.

  1. Boots, What a perfect way to sum up the significance of all these names! My Mom was adopted & found her biological family when she was 72 yrs. old and met her half brothers and sister who received her w/open arms! She was blessed to know them & they were equally blessed to know her. It meant so much to her! Praise God, she was adopted into God's Kingdom as a little girl & I look forward to having her welcome me there one day! Your song is my song & especially blesses me this morning as I prepare to meet w/my Brothers & Sisters to worship our Savior! Hallelujah!!!

  2. Boots, thanks for making the first chapters of Chronicles relevant and clear to us. As you talked about adoption I thought about my best friend and her husband adopting their daughter 7 years ago. They were in the delivery room from the minute she was born. They took Hannah home from the hospital and she is their daughter. Hannah even looks a lot like my friend. I know many families who have adopted children and they are truly blessed. I also am glad I have been adopted into the family of God. That is the most important thing any of us can have in our life-Our SALVATION!!!!

  4. Hang in there with Chronicles Ladies! It can be a little "dry" at times, but keep in mind the "big picture" as Boots did such a GREAT job of doing for us! My ancestory on my father's side goes back to Robert E. Lee, and it is important to know your ancestory and where you come from. This was especially important for the Jewish poeple, even more so than it is for us as Americans, so the importance of the geneaology cannot be overstated. It is also SO important for us to know the family line of our Savior, after all, is there anyone more important than Him?

  5. Thanks Boots for a great post. Our ancestry is so important and it is interesting as well. In my background, I have a great great grandmother that was saved from the "Trail of Tears" when she married a Christian man in Florida. You just never know . . .

Also I was out of town this past week helping out with my new grandson so I wanted to thank Jeanette for doing my Blog on Thursday and to Natalie for posting it for her. I kept up with the reading but knew that my foggy brain from sleep deprevation would need some help. Great job Jeanette!!

Like Jaybrena, I'm looking foward to learning more about the kings we have met so far in the book of Chronicles.

  6. Mom,

I also thought, God is showing us the importance of a Godly heritage! How blessed we are, those of us who have been given a goodly and Godly heritage!

  7. I noticed that only a few women were mentioned in all these names and we remembered most of them. I know that God knows my name and hears me when I call. As Boots blog shows us we can sing our blog. There are some words I can read but I sing them.
I am in California with my daughter and her family. My grandson who is 14 finished his training for conformation today and it was so impressive. He is so special and I know his name is going to be in a list of special people one day. I will be listed as his grandmother if they mention women. If they don't I know who he belongs to. I love my family and my church family as well. Miss ya'll.

  8. Nobody famous in our lines yet, but Robby and I found out that our great grandfathers were brothers......yeah. Careful what you research, LOL! We still receive ribbing over this. Still, researching ancestry can be richly rewarding!

Robby's family line includes a man and his wife who settled in Jamestown, VA in 1776! That was way cool to this history nerd, Thomas was a carpenter and had a creek named after him. We went in search of Passmore Creek a couple years ago and took pictures. :)

  9. There are rumors on Tim's side of the family that he goes back to Robert E. Lee. Mindy, maybe you and Tim are cousins :)

My grandmother traced our family line up to Governor William Bradford who came over on the Mayflower.

Bill, I am sooooo thankful for my family heritage. I was blessed to grow up in a Christian home also. I realize more and more over time what a blessing that was and still is!

  10. My Papa was very big on our family history and genealogy. He was also a great story teller, and I loved to listen to him tell us about people in our family or stories about his life growing up. I wish I could remember more of what he told us. Since he's passed away, my family and I have asked a question about something related to family history, and we all knew that if he was just still here- we would have the answer! My Uncle is also big into researching family history on the other side of my family too. History is important for a couple of reasons- we can learn from the past's mistakes and successes and two, "how do you know where you're going if you don't know where you came from?" Our families shape so much of our lives. I can't overstate the importance of my church family growing up. We are blessed as believers to have such a large extended family, and to be adopted into the family line of believers that goes back to Abraham. "Father Abraham...had many sons...many son's had father Abraham! I am one of them...and so are you! So let's just praise the Lord!"
Missing all my Oak Hill family these next couple of weeks. Working every other Sunday and then we are out of town for the one in between...praying for all of you there!
